Have you ever wondered why dogs are called ‘Man’s Best Friend’? Why dogs? Why not cats, or guinea pigs, or parrots? There are lots of species of animals, but why dogs? Well, in this report, I am going to tell you all about why dogs are the ones that are called ‘Man’s Best Friend’

Dogs can be trained for lots of things, like smelling drugs in the police, hunting, tracking, and a lot more things. They can be trained for herding sheep, cows, and other farm animals. They can protect you and guard really well. They are also loyal and playful. Their noses have a great sense of smell, which is what the dog's need for most of the tasks they do to become man's best friend. Lots of people love dogs, but cats won't cut it (sorry cat lovers, the dogs won).

The dog's sense of smell is really amazing. Those noses that they use can track down people, sense danger, and smell illegal or suspicious items. A dog's sense of smell is at least 2 times better than humans sense of smell. The distance they smell is actually over 1.6 kilometres (1 mile)! Lots of people like to make use of the dog's sense of smell. The police use them to track people and illegal items, hunters use them to hunt animals, the border patrol use them to smell contraband inside luggage and mail, and probably more that I don’t know of. That tells how good a dog's sense of smell is.

Training. Something that has a range of difficulty to do. For some dogs it is easy, for others it’s hard. If we succeed in training them, we can train them for a range of things. The police train dogs for sniffing drugs, tracking people, scaring people out of their hiding holes and chasing after crooks if the make a run for it. Farmers train dogs to round up farm animals, hunters train them to track down animals, and who knows how hard they needed to train to achieve this job.

Dogs help blind people and they guide them around. They help them so they don’t bang into anything. Dogs that help the blind people are actually called “The Blind Persons Eyes”. Of course everyone knows that blind people need dog's to help them, but if not, their relatives can help them. But when a dog's is at the job, the dog is basically a relative.
